Years 7 & 8 – Debating and Detecting

Posted: 12th November 2021

Year 7 pupils have been studying ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar this term. They have thoroughly enjoyed ‘popcorn reading’ the novel as a class, and have produced some fantastic pieces of work. The novel requires the reader to be a detective in order to solve the mystery behind the Yelnats’ bad fortune, and why the inmates at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention centre, are made to dig a hole everyday in the hot sun as punishment for their crimes. Year 7 were debating the following notion, “If you make a bad boy dig a hole everyday in the hot sun, it will make them a good boy.” What are your thoughts on this?

Meanwhile, Year 8 pupils have been focusing on ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne this term. They have been busy researching different contextual topics about WW2 and presenting to the class their findings. Year 8 have also been preparing for their upcoming assessments by producing some fantastic analytical essays and entering into some brilliant classroom discussions and debates. Very well done!
