  • Monday 21 January 2019 Geography Pupils in 6X were treated to a brilliant demonstration in their geography lesson this week. Archie L used Mars bars to illustrate what happens at the four major tectonic plate boundaries.

  • Monday 21 January 2019 PSHCE Year 7 and 8 participated in the first ever Holmwood House Model United Nations Conference on Tuesday and Thursday mornings this week. MUN is a simulation of the United Nations and an outstanding activity for developing an understanding of international affairs.

  • Friday 7 December 2018 Boarding News On Friday night, we had our first Big Boarding Night In. 65 boarders from years 4 to 8 stayed overnight and enjoyed a wealth of activities. Taco fighting, garland making, Mexican ball games, the Mexican chicken game, callucca making and face painting, followed by a supper of nachos, ice cream and popcorn with the film Coco. After this, the Years 4 and 5 went to bed while the Years 6, 7 & 8 stayed up a little longer for a Fright Night themed walk.
  • Friday 7 December 2018 Pre-Prep Community Event 2018 The Pre-Prep hosted our second Christmas Community Event. Local residents and grandparents of the Reception children were invited along for an afternoon of festivities. Every child in the Pre-Prep had made a decoration and the Talbot Room took on a very festive feel with the added bonus of beautiful greenery from the grounds.

  • Friday 7 December 2018 Pupil Achievements Congratulations to those pupils who received colours and badges in assembly this week.
  • Friday 7 December 2018 Pre-Prep Golden Awards Golden Awards are made weekly to individuals in each class based on the Golden Rules. Under these criteria, the awards are made for the whole term, the child receiving an annotated leaf which is placed on the Golden Tree for all to see. In addition the child receives a Golden Award badge to wear for the week. The presentations are made weekly in the Pre-Prep assembly.
  • Friday 7 December 2018 Times Table Challenge Announcing the results of this term's Times Table Challlenge.
  • Friday 7 December 2018 Year 7 Geography During recent lessons in geography, pupils in Year 7 have been exploring the possibility of protecting the northern section of coastline at Walton-on-the-Naze. Currently this part of the coast is designated an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and any protection is forbidden.
  • Tuesday 4 December 2018 Year 8 PSHCE On Monday, Years 7 and 8 were lucky enough to have a talk from defence barrister, Rupert Hallowes. This formed an important part of the Year 8s learning on Law and Justice in PSHCE but is also influential in terms of an understanding of careers and future opportunities.
  • Monday 3 December 2018 Pre-Prep Christmas Productions 2018 This year's Pre-Prep Productions were 'A Christmas Tail' by the Rs and 1s, followed by 'Lights, Camel, Action' by the 2s and 3s. They did a superb job and we are very proud of them all.

  • Friday 30 November 2018 Forest School Over the last couple of weeks Year 2 have been busy in Forest school! As well as all the usual equipment and activities, the children were introduced to using hand and palm drills. They had to carefully drill a hole in a small circle of wood before sanding, decorating and varnishing it. Then string needed cutting, threading and tying so that their beautiful talismans could be hung on a branch.

  • Friday 30 November 2018 Boarding News Year 8 boarders had a lovely cinema evening on Wednesday, watching the new release, Skyscraper and eating Nachos, ice cream and the obligatory popcorn!
  • Friday 30 November 2018 Year 4 Geography Pupils in Year 4 geography have been busy learning about height on maps during this week's lesson. Portraying the 3D landscape using a 2D format is a difficult thing to achieve; interpreting the information can be even more challenging. By drawing ‘Contour Lines’ onto a potato, pupils learn in a kinesthetic way how contour lines can show hills on a map. Plus, they have plenty of fun doing it!
  • Friday 30 November 2018 Year 8 Trip to London Year 8 experienced an outstanding day in London on Tuesday supporting their learning on law, justice and politics in PSHCE, as well as developing their citizenship and public speaking more generally.
  • Friday 30 November 2018 Year 6 Trip to The Globe Theatre Last Friday Year 6 went to visit the Globe Theatre. They were given a tour of the theatre, including backstage and learnt many things about Elizabethan theatre - as well as sharing their own knowledge with the guide. They were allowed on stage and given lines to present as if they were actors in Shakespeare's day.
  • Monday 26 November 2018 PSHCE PS7 wrote, planned and performed part of last Friday's assembly on World Children's Day. They were given four simple questions as a catalyst and rose to the challenge, marking this important event suitably and raising the Prep School's awareness of children's rights.
  • Monday 26 November 2018 Pupil News - Week 11 Some of our Year 3 girls took their first ballet exam on Sunday 25 November. They came out with beaming smiles and full of joy.
  • Friday 23 November 2018 From the Headmaster.... We have seen some really good focus from our senior pupils this week as they have either been involved in Year 7 and 8 assessments or preparing to be. It is great to see the older pupils act as role models for our younger children and I know the Buddy system is much valued by all the children both young and older.  Our Year 6s are enjoying their first visit to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London to watch Much Ado About Nothing.  The pupils' response to their Shakespeare studies has been really encouraging and I am delighted that this important feature of our national literacy archive is being shared so expertly with the children in the Prep school.
  • Friday 23 November 2018 Year 6 PRE Calling all budding actors! The Year 6 PRE pupils have written and acted in a short drama based upon a moral dilemma!
  • Friday 23 November 2018 Element News - Week 10 It was another successful week for Air. Many show ups were collected!Well done to everyone who played in a match this week and congratulations to Year 5 who won the Kahoot! game. We hope the Year 6 have fun on their trip to The Globe Theatre.

  • Friday 23 November 2018 Year 5 Geography During the last three weeks, all pupils in Year 5 have been busy planning and creating a newspaper article on the eruption of the Mount St Helens volcano. This is an assessed piece which encourages the pupils to develop a number of key 5R skills.
  • Friday 23 November 2018 Year 5 STEM Pupils in Year 5 have been having plenty of fun whilst learning about the design process of their propeller driven vehicles. Some of the pupils have now completed their vehicles. They will now start to review what they have done and come up with improvements. Once all the vehicles are completed we will have a race!

  • Friday 23 November 2018 Uppingham Quiz Eight pupils trekked to Uppingham School on Tuesday to take plart, as two teams, in the annual 'On The Buzzer' general knowledge competition which we won last year. We put in a solid performance against the other 8 schools participating but did not reach the semi-finals this time. Nevermind, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the marvellous afternoon tea that followed (lots of sweets, cake and ice cream sundaes!) and we are very proud of the lapel pins we received for taking part.
